SAP Error Message - Details

  • Message class: FDT_DSM - BRFplus: Decision Service Manager

  • Message text: Cannot switch to edit mode - objects locked by user &1

  • Show details Hide details
  • What causes this issue?

You have tried to switch the Decision Service Manager to edit mode.
However, user &v1& is already using the system in edit mode. Therefore,
all other users are restricted to display mode as long as the editing
session of user &v1& is active.

    System Response

The Decision Service Manager is running in display mode.

    How to fix this error?

As long as the editing session of user &v1& is running, you cannot
change the settings that are available in the Decision Service Manager.
However, this does not mean that you cannot deploy services that have
already been defined. The edit mode of the Decision Service Manager is
only related to those activities that are dealing with setting up
managed systems and defining the applications and services to be
deployed. In contrast to that, you can always deploy the already defined
services to a managed system, and you can also access the deployed
source code, as well as the XML representation.
If, however, you want to change the definitions or add additional
functions as services, you have to wait until user &v1& has finished the
    editing session.

    Procedure for System Administrators

The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message FDT_DSM071 - Cannot switch to edit mode - objects locked by user &1 ?

The SAP error message FDT_DSM071 indicates that a user is trying to switch to edit mode for a certain object, but the object is currently locked by another user. This is a common issue in SAP systems where multiple users may be working on the same objects or data.

    Cause:

    The error occurs when:

    • Another user has locked the object for editing, preventing others from making changes.
    • The lock could be due to an active session where the object is being edited.
    • The object may have been locked due to a previous session that did not release the lock properly.

    Solution:

To resolve this issue, you can take the following steps:

    1. Identify the Locking User:

      • Check the user ID mentioned in the error message (e.g., &1). This indicates which user has locked the object.
      • You can use transaction code SM12 to view and manage locks in the system. Enter the user ID to find the specific lock.
    2. Contact the Locking User:

      • If possible, reach out to the user who has locked the object and ask them to release the lock if they are done editing.
    3. Release the Lock:

      • If the locking user is unavailable or if the lock is stale (e.g., the user has logged off without releasing the lock), you may need to release the lock yourself.
      • In transaction SM12, you can select the lock entry and delete it. Be cautious when doing this, as it may lead to data inconsistency if the user is still working on the object.
    4. Check for Background Jobs:

      • Sometimes, background jobs may also hold locks on objects. Check transaction SM37 to see if any background jobs are running that might be locking the object.
    5. Wait and Retry:

      • If the lock is temporary and you can wait, you may simply retry after some time.

    Related Information:

    • Lock Management: Understanding how SAP handles locks can help in troubleshooting. Locks are used to prevent data inconsistencies when multiple users are accessing the same data.
    • Transaction Codes:
      • SM12: To view and manage locks.
      • SM37: To check background jobs.
      • SE11: To check the data dictionary for the object in question.
    • User Sessions: Sometimes, users may have multiple sessions open. Ensure that the user is not editing the object in another session.

By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the error and switch to edit mode successfully.
