Message text: Device &1, reg &2: Cannot change MR results because of backbilling
You attempted to change a meter reading result that lies within a
backbilling period. This is not possible.
The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.
Check whether you have made changes to any of the following fields:
- Meter reading
- Meter reading date, actual meter reading date or the date of the
maximum
- Meter reader note, actual meter reading type or meter reader
Also check the type of backbilling.
1. Floating backbilling
In this case, it is possible to change the meter reading if the
Customizing settings permit it (see table TE410 "MRRs can be changed").
Other data (meter reading date, for example) cannot be changed.
2. Dynamic period control
In this case it is generally possible to change the meter reading
result. If it is a control meter reading, you can also change all other
data that is ready for input.

EL444
- Device &1, reg &2: Cannot change MR results because of backbilling ?The SAP error message EL444 indicates that there is an issue with changing meter reading (MR) results due to backbilling constraints. This typically occurs in the context of utilities management, where meter readings are used for billing purposes. Here’s a breakdown of the cause, potential solutions, and related information:
Cause:
- Backbilling Restrictions: The error arises when there are restrictions in place that prevent changes to meter reading results that would affect billing. This is often due to regulatory requirements or company policies that limit how far back in time billing can be adjusted.
- Locked Periods: The billing period may be locked, meaning that any changes to the meter readings for that period are not allowed.
- Completed Billing: If billing has already been completed for the period in question, changes to the meter readings may not be permitted.
Solution:
- Check Billing Status: Verify if the billing for the period in question has been completed. If it has, you may need to reverse the billing or create a credit note instead of changing the meter reading.
- Unlock Period: If the period is locked, you may need to unlock it. This typically requires administrative privileges and should be done with caution, as it can affect financial reporting.
- Consult Policies: Review your organization’s policies on backbilling and meter reading adjustments. There may be specific procedures to follow for making changes.
- Use Adjustments: If you need to correct the billing, consider using adjustment transactions that are designed for this purpose, rather than directly changing the meter readings.
- Contact Support: If you are unsure how to proceed, it may be beneficial to contact your SAP support team or a consultant who specializes in SAP utilities management.
