You are editing a successor of a development object. You have changed
the attributes of a segment type of the predecessor in a way which
would change the hierarchy level. This is not allowed for compatibility
    reasons.
Changes which are not allowed to be made to predecessor segments are:
Increase the 'Max. number' for segment types at hierarchy level '1'.
The value for the 'Max. number' must remain '1'.
Reduce the 'Max. number' to value '1' for a segment at hierarchy level
    '2'.
The value for the 'Max. number' must remain greater than '1'.

The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

    How to fix this error?

Do not make the changes specified above to segment types which are

  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message E0769 - Segment attributes changed in a way not allowed - level would be changed ?

The SAP error message E0769, which states "Segment attributes changed in a way not allowed - level would be changed," typically occurs in the context of data modeling or data structure changes in SAP systems, particularly when working with data segments in IDocs or similar structures.

    Cause:

This error usually arises when there is an attempt to modify the attributes of a segment in a way that would change its hierarchical level. For example, if you are trying to change a segment from a child segment to a parent segment or vice versa, this would violate the structural integrity of the data model, leading to this error.

    Solution:

To resolve this error, consider the following steps:

    1. Review Changes: Check the changes you are trying to implement in the segment attributes. Ensure that you are not inadvertently changing the hierarchical level of the segment.

    2. Revert Changes: If you have made changes that caused this error, revert them to the previous state where the segment structure was valid.

    3. Check Dependencies: Ensure that any changes you are making do not affect other segments or structures that depend on the current hierarchy.

    4. Consult Documentation: Refer to SAP documentation or guidelines regarding segment attributes and their allowed changes. This can provide insights into what modifications are permissible.

    5. Use Transaction Codes: If you are working with IDocs, you might want to use transaction codes like WE30 (IDoc Type Development) or WE31 (Segment Type Development) to review and adjust the segment definitions properly.

    6. Testing: After making the necessary adjustments, test the changes in a development or test environment before applying them to production.

    Related Information:

    • IDoc Structure: Understanding the structure of IDocs and how segments are defined is crucial. Each segment has a specific level, and changing this level can lead to inconsistencies.
    • SAP Notes: Check for any relevant SAP Notes that might address this specific error or provide additional context or solutions.
    • Version Control: If you are using version control for your data models, ensure that you are working with the correct version and that any changes are properly documented.

If the issue persists after following these steps, it may be beneficial to consult with an SAP expert or reach out to SAP support for further assistance.
