Message type: E = Error
Message class: DDLS - For DDL source handling
Message number: 425
Message text: DDL source & of type & cannot be converted to & (-> long text)
A DDL source defines an SQL view, a table function, an enhancement for
SQL views, or a table entity. A conversion with these DDL source types
is currently not possible, just like the conversion to another ABAP
Dictionary type -- for example, a data element or a table.
Neither is it possible to delete a DDL source of a DDL source type and
afterwards to create it again with a different DDL source type and keep
the name.
Check or activation was not successful.
If you want to create a DDL source with a different DDL source type,
delete the current DDL source and create a new one. All the newly
defined artifacts are to get new names in this process.
If you need to create another dictionary type with the entity name of
the DDL source, the DDL source in this case must also be deleted. Only
then can you create the dictionary type.
The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

The SAP error message DDLS425 indicates that there is an issue with the Data Definition Language (DDL) source and its type conversion. This error typically occurs when there is an attempt to convert a data type that is not compatible with the target type in a DDL operation, such as when creating or altering database objects.
Cause:
The error can be caused by several factors, including:
- Incompatible Data Types: The source data type is not compatible with the target data type. For example, trying to convert a character type to a numeric type without proper formatting.
- Database Constraints: The database may have constraints that prevent the conversion from occurring.
- Incorrect DDL Syntax: There may be a syntax error in the DDL statement that is causing the conversion to fail.
- Version Mismatch: The version of the database or the SAP system may not support certain data types or conversions.
Solution:
To resolve the DDLS425 error, you can take the following steps:
- Check Data Types: Review the data types involved in the DDL operation. Ensure that the source and target types are compatible. You may need to adjust the data types in your DDL statement.
- Modify DDL Statement: If there is a syntax error, correct it. Ensure that the DDL statement follows the correct syntax for the database you are working with.
- Use CAST or CONVERT Functions: If applicable, use SQL functions like
CAST
orCONVERT
to explicitly convert data types in your SQL statements.- Review Database Documentation: Check the documentation for your specific database version to understand the supported data types and any limitations regarding conversions.
- Test in a Development Environment: If possible, test your changes in a development or test environment before applying them to production.

SAP messages fall into 3 different categories: Error messages
(message type = E), Warnings (W) or Informational (I) messages.
An error message will prevent you from continuing your work - it is a hard stop and you need to fix the error before you can proceed. A warning message will stop your work, however, you can then bypass the warning by pressing the Enter key on your keyboard. That said, it is still good practice to investigate the cause of the warning message and address it. An information message will not stop your work and is truly just for informational purposes.
