  • What causes this issue?

When the dependency is evaluated during the BOM or planned explosion,
the system should valuate the characteristic <(>&<)>v1& with the value
<(>&<)>v4&. However, an error in the arithmetic occurred.
Characteristic <(>&<)>v1& is a reference characteristic with a reference
to field <(>&<)>v3& of the Data Dictionary <(>&<)>v2&. The value
<(>&<)>v4& is not compatible with the field type <(>&<)>v3&.

  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message CUIB1053 - Arithmetic error for characteristic &1 (reference to &2-&3) and value &4 ?

The SAP error message CUIB1053, which indicates an "Arithmetic error for characteristic &1 (reference to &2-&3) and value &4," typically arises in the context of SAP's classification system, particularly when dealing with characteristics and their values in the context of classification and variant configuration.

    Cause:

    1. Invalid Data: The error often occurs when there is an invalid or incompatible value assigned to a characteristic. This could be due to:

      • A value that is not numeric when a numeric value is expected.
      • A division by zero or other arithmetic operations that are not valid.
      • Incorrectly defined ranges or limits for the characteristic.
    2. Configuration Issues: There may be issues in the configuration of the characteristics or the classes they belong to, such as:

      • Missing or incorrect dependencies.
      • Incorrectly defined formulas or calculations that involve the characteristic.
    3. Data Type Mismatch: The characteristic may be defined with a specific data type, and the value being processed does not match this type.

    Solution:

    1. Check Characteristic Values: Review the values assigned to the characteristic in question. Ensure that they are valid and conform to the expected data type (e.g., numeric, string).

    2. Review Configuration:

      • Check the configuration of the characteristic and its dependencies. Ensure that all dependencies are correctly defined and that there are no circular references.
      • Verify that any formulas or calculations involving the characteristic are correctly defined and do not lead to arithmetic errors.
    3. Data Validation: Implement data validation checks to ensure that the values being processed are within acceptable ranges and formats.

    4. Debugging: If you have access to debugging tools, you can trace the execution to identify where the arithmetic error is occurring. This may provide insights into the specific operation that is failing.

    5. Consult Documentation: Refer to SAP documentation or support notes related to the specific version of SAP you are using. There may be known issues or patches available.
