Message type: E = Error
Message class: CU - Variants / configuration messages
Message number: 393
Message text: Error in reference characteristic &1 due to cause &2 (-> see long text)
An incorrect or wrongly-used object characteristic has been located in
the knowledge base.
Causes:
1: Character for variant conditions cannot have multiple values.
2: A different characteristic already exists with a reference to the
same table field.
3: The characteristic was not used by the modeller in classes or object
dependencies. The characteristic is however required for processing in
SCE (for example, condition characteristic for deriving 1:1 variant
conditions).
For:
1: In the SCE knowledge base, the characteristic is treated as a
characteristic with multiple values.
2: The generation of the knowledge base was cancelled.
3: The characteristic was automatically copied by the knowledge base
generation.
For
1: Define the characteristic for variant conditions as a characteristic
with multiple values.
2: Ensure that one object characteristic is avaiable for each reference
field (table field) in the knowledge base.

- Error in reference characteristic &1 due to cause &2 (-> see long text) ?The SAP error message CU393 typically relates to issues with characteristics in the classification system, particularly when dealing with reference characteristics in the context of classification and variant configuration.
Cause:
The error message CU393 indicates that there is a problem with a reference characteristic. The specific causes can vary, but common reasons include:
- Missing or Incorrect Configuration: The reference characteristic may not be properly defined or may be missing in the classification system.
- Inconsistent Data: There may be inconsistencies in the data related to the characteristic, such as incorrect values or types.
- Dependency Issues: There could be issues with dependencies or constraints that are not being met for the reference characteristic.
- Authorization Issues: The user may not have the necessary authorizations to access or modify the reference characteristic.
Solution:
To resolve the CU393 error, you can take the following steps:
- Check Characteristic Definition: Verify that the reference characteristic is correctly defined in the classification system. Ensure that it exists and is active.
- Review Dependencies: Check any dependencies or constraints associated with the reference characteristic. Make sure that all required conditions are met.
- Data Consistency: Ensure that the data related to the characteristic is consistent and valid. Look for any discrepancies in the values assigned to the characteristic.
- Authorization Check: Confirm that the user has the necessary authorizations to access and modify the reference characteristic.
- Long Text Analysis: Review the long text associated with the error message for additional details that may provide more context on the specific issue.
