  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message CNV_20700021 - New material &2 already exists (implicit merge);see long text ?

The SAP error message CNV_20700021 indicates that during a data migration or conversion process, a new material with the same identifier already exists in the system. This typically occurs in scenarios where data is being imported or merged, and the system detects a conflict with existing records.

    Cause:

    1. Duplicate Material Numbers: The error arises when the system attempts to create a new material that has the same material number as an existing one.
    2. Implicit Merge: The term "implicit merge" suggests that the system is trying to merge the new material data with the existing one, but it cannot proceed due to the conflict.
    3. Data Migration Issues: This can happen during data migration projects, especially when consolidating data from multiple sources or systems.

    Solution:

    1. Check Existing Materials: Verify if the material number already exists in the system. You can do this by searching for the material in the material master (transaction code MM03).
    2. Adjust Data: If the material already exists and you do not need to create a new one, you may need to adjust your data import or migration strategy to avoid creating duplicates.
    3. Modify Material Number: If the new material is indeed different and should be created, consider changing the material number in your source data to ensure it does not conflict with existing records.
    4. Use Merge Functionality: If the intention is to merge the data, ensure that the data being imported is correctly formatted and that the merge logic is properly defined in your migration process.
    5. Consult Long Text: The error message suggests checking the long text for more details. This can provide additional context or specific instructions related to the error.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes: Familiarize yourself with relevant transaction codes such as MM01 (Create Material), MM02 (Change Material), and MM03 (Display Material) to manage material data.
    • Data Migration Tools: If you are using SAP tools for data migration (like LSMW or SAP S/4HANA Migration Cockpit), review the mapping and transformation rules to ensure they are set up correctly.
    • SAP Notes: Check for any SAP Notes related to this error message for potential patches or updates that may address the issue.
