Message text: Freely defined reference point overrules a fixed reference point
You want to maintain a freely defined reference point for BOM transfer
As from Release 4.6A there is a fixed reference point as an entity in
Customizing. It is can be maintained both in BOM and network
maintenance. This new reference point is used in BOM transfer, if no
freely definable reference point has been entered
The freely definable reference point has been retained, for reasons of
compatibility and can be used as an assignment criteriion as an
alernative to the fixed reference point.
Decide which reference point you want to use in BOM transfer.

CN299
- Freely defined reference point overrules a fixed reference point ?The SAP error message CN299, which states "Freely defined reference point overrules a fixed reference point," typically occurs in the context of project management and controlling within SAP, particularly when dealing with network planning and cost management.
Cause:
This error arises when there is a conflict between a freely defined reference point and a fixed reference point in a project or network. A freely defined reference point allows for more flexibility in planning, while a fixed reference point is more rigid and is often used for standardization or compliance purposes. The system does not allow both types of reference points to coexist in a way that creates ambiguity in the project structure.
Solution:
To resolve this error, you can take the following steps:
Review Reference Points: Check the reference points defined in your project or network. Identify where the conflict is occurring between the freely defined and fixed reference points.
Adjust Reference Points:
- If you need to keep the fixed reference point, consider changing the freely defined reference point to a fixed one, if applicable.
- Alternatively, if the flexibility of the freely defined reference point is necessary, you may need to remove or adjust the fixed reference point.
Consult Documentation: Refer to SAP documentation or help resources for specific guidelines on how to manage reference points in your version of SAP.
Check Configuration Settings: Sometimes, the issue may stem from configuration settings in the project management module. Ensure that the settings align with your project requirements.
Seek Help from SAP Support: If the issue persists, consider reaching out to SAP support or your internal SAP team for further assistance.
