The SAP error message CMS044 ("The selected key is reserved for SAP") typically occurs when you attempt to create or modify a key (such as a document number, customer number, or material number) that is reserved for SAP's internal use. This can happen in various modules, including SAP Customer Management (CRM), SAP Materials Management (MM), or others.

    Cause:

    1. Reserved Key Ranges: SAP has predefined key ranges for certain objects that are reserved for system use. If you try to use a key that falls within these reserved ranges, you will encounter this error.

    3. Configuration Issues: Incorrect configuration in number range settings can lead to this error.

    Solution:

    1. Check Number Ranges: Review the number range settings for the object you are working with. Ensure that the key you are trying to use does not fall within the reserved ranges. You can do this by:

      • Navigating to the relevant configuration transaction (e.g., SNRO for number ranges).
      • Checking the defined number ranges for the object in question.
    2. Use a Different Key: If the key you are trying to use is reserved, select a different key that does not conflict with SAP's reserved keys.

    3. Adjust Custom Number Ranges: If you are working with custom number ranges, ensure that they are defined correctly and do not overlap with SAP's reserved ranges. You may need to create a new number range that is entirely outside of the reserved range.

    4. Consult Documentation: Refer to SAP documentation or help resources for specific information about reserved keys for the module you are working with.

    5. Contact SAP Support: If you are unable to resolve the issue, consider reaching out to SAP support for assistance, especially if this is impacting critical business processes.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes: You may need to use transaction codes like SNRO (Number Range Objects) to view and manage number ranges.
    • SAP Notes: Check for any relevant SAP Notes that might address this specific error or provide additional guidance.
    • User Authorization: Ensure that you have the necessary authorizations to create or modify the keys in question.
