  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message CC409 - Numeric change numbers already exist in the system ?

The SAP error message CC409 ("Numeric change numbers already exist in the system") typically occurs in the context of Change Management within SAP, particularly when dealing with change numbers in the SAP Project System (PS) or Production Planning (PP) modules. This error indicates that there is an attempt to create or use a change number that already exists in the system, which can lead to conflicts or inconsistencies.

    Cause:

    1. Duplicate Change Numbers: The most common cause of this error is that the change number you are trying to create or use is already present in the system. Change numbers are unique identifiers, and SAP does not allow duplicates.
    2. Incorrect Configuration: There may be issues with the configuration settings for change management, leading to the system not recognizing the uniqueness of the change number.
    3. Data Migration Issues: If data has been migrated from another system or if there have been manual entries, it is possible that duplicate change numbers were introduced.

    Solution:

    1. Check Existing Change Numbers: Use transaction codes like CC03 (Display Change Number) or CC01 (Create Change Number) to check if the change number you are trying to use already exists. If it does, you may need to use a different number.
    2. Use a Unique Change Number: If you find that the change number is already in use, create a new change number that is unique.
    3. Review Configuration: Ensure that the configuration settings for change management are correctly set up to prevent duplicates. This may involve checking the number range settings for change numbers.
    4. Data Cleanup: If duplicates were introduced due to data migration or manual entry, consider cleaning up the data to remove duplicates or consolidate change numbers as necessary.
    5. Consult Documentation: Refer to SAP documentation or help resources for specific guidelines on managing change numbers and resolving conflicts.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes: Familiarize yourself with relevant transaction codes such as CC01, CC02, CC03, and CC04 for creating, changing, displaying, and deleting change numbers.
    • Number Ranges: Check the number range configuration for change numbers in the system to ensure that it is set up correctly and does not allow for duplicates.
    • SAP Notes: Look for SAP Notes related to this error message for any patches or updates that may address known issues.
    • User Authorization: Ensure that you have the necessary authorizations to create or modify change numbers in the system.
