  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message BRAIN224 - Query is input ready; &1 will be added as a free characteristic ?

The SAP error message BRAIN224 indicates that a query is input-ready, and a specific characteristic (denoted by &1) will be added as a free characteristic. This message typically arises in the context of SAP BW (Business Warehouse) or SAP BI (Business Intelligence) when working with queries in the BEx (Business Explorer) Query Designer.

    Cause:

    1. Input-Ready Query: The query is designed to allow user input, meaning that it can accept parameters or filters from the user at runtime.
    2. Free Characteristics: A free characteristic is a characteristic that is not part of the query's structure but can be used for filtering or selection. When the query is input-ready, certain characteristics may be automatically added as free characteristics based on the query's design or the data model.

    Solution:

    1. Review Query Design: Check the design of the query in the BEx Query Designer. Ensure that the characteristics you want to use as free characteristics are correctly defined and that the query is set up to allow user input.
    2. Adjust Free Characteristics: If you do not want a specific characteristic to be added as a free characteristic, you can modify the query settings. You can do this by:
      • Opening the query in the BEx Query Designer.
      • Navigating to the "Free Characteristics" section.
      • Removing or adjusting the characteristics as needed.
    3. Check for Conflicts: Ensure that there are no conflicts between the characteristics defined in the query and the data model. Sometimes, characteristics may be automatically added due to dependencies or relationships in the data model.
    4. Test the Query: After making adjustments, test the query to ensure that it behaves as expected and that the free characteristics are functioning correctly.

    Related Information:

    • BEx Query Designer: This is the tool used to create and modify queries in SAP BW/BI. Familiarity with its features and functionalities is essential for troubleshooting issues like BRAIN224.
    • Free Characteristics: Understanding how free characteristics work in SAP BW queries is crucial. They allow users to filter data dynamically at runtime, enhancing the flexibility of reports.
