SAP Error Message - Details

  • Message type: E = Error

  • Message class: BRAIN -

  • Message number: 087

  • Message text: Different hierarchies are used for characteristic &1

  • Show details Hide details
  • What causes this issue?

A presentation hierarchy is scheduled for characteristic &V1&.
Furthermore, characteristic &V1& is restricted to a hierarchy node. The
presentation hierarchy that was selected or parameterized through
variables does not always agree with the selection hierarchy. In certain
cases this can be desirable and useful (for example, for a comparison of
different versions of the organizational structure). In most cases, this
is unintended and leads to unexpected query results.

    System Response

The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

    How to fix this error?

Check the parameterization of the hierarchies involved.
Note that a hierarchy is first uniquely determined through the entirety
of all key components (name, version, key date or key date derivation
type). Furthermore, most components can be determined using variables.

  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message BRAIN087 - Different hierarchies are used for characteristic &1 ?

The SAP error message BRAIN087, which states "Different hierarchies are used for characteristic &1," typically occurs in the context of SAP BW (Business Warehouse) or SAP BI (Business Intelligence) when there is an inconsistency in the hierarchy levels being used for a particular characteristic in a query or report.

    Cause:

This error usually arises due to one of the following reasons:

    1. Multiple Hierarchies: The characteristic in question has multiple hierarchies defined, and the query or report is trying to access data from different hierarchies simultaneously, which is not allowed.

    2. Hierarchy Assignment: The hierarchy assigned to the characteristic in the InfoObject may not match the hierarchy being used in the query or report.

    3. Data Source Issues: The data source may have been changed or updated, leading to inconsistencies in the hierarchy definitions.

    4. Query Design: The query may be designed in such a way that it inadvertently references different hierarchies for the same characteristic.

    Solution:

To resolve the BRAIN087 error, you can take the following steps:

    1. Check Hierarchies: Go to the InfoObject maintenance for the characteristic in question and check the hierarchies defined. Ensure that the correct hierarchy is being used in your query.

    2. Modify the Query: If the query is referencing multiple hierarchies, modify it to ensure that only one hierarchy is used for the characteristic. You can do this by adjusting the query filters or the structure of the query.

    3. Consistency Check: Perform a consistency check on the InfoProvider and the query to ensure that all settings are aligned. This can often be done through transaction codes like RSA1 (Data Warehousing Workbench) or RSRT (Query Monitor).

    4. Rebuild the Query: If the issue persists, consider rebuilding the query from scratch to ensure that all settings are correctly applied.

    5. Check for Updates: If there have been recent changes to the data model or hierarchies, ensure that all relevant objects are updated and that the query reflects these changes.

    6. Consult Documentation: Review SAP documentation or notes related to the specific version of SAP BW/BI you are using, as there may be version-specific considerations or patches available.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes: Familiarize yourself with relevant transaction codes such as RSA1 (Data Warehousing Workbench), RSRT (Query Monitor), and RSD1 (InfoObject Maintenance) for managing InfoObjects and queries.
    • SAP Notes: Check SAP Notes for any known issues or fixes related to this error message.
    • SAP Community: Engage with the SAP Community forums for insights from other users who may have encountered and resolved similar issues.

By following these steps, you should be able to identify the cause of the BRAIN087 error and implement a suitable solution.
