The SAP error message 37098, which states "Element already exists (edit with 'Attributes' function)," typically occurs in the context of SAP's data modeling or configuration environments, such as when working with Business Objects, Data Warehousing, or similar applications. This error indicates that you are trying to create or define an element (like a characteristic, key figure, or other data object) that already exists in the system.
Cause:
- Duplicate Definition: The most common cause of this error is that you are attempting to create an element that has already been defined in the system. This could happen if you are trying to add a new characteristic or key figure with the same name or identifier as an existing one.
- Incorrect Configuration: Sometimes, the error can arise from incorrect configuration settings or attempts to modify existing elements without using the appropriate editing tools.
- Namespace Conflicts: If you are working in a multi-client environment or with different namespaces, there may be conflicts with existing elements.
Solution:
Use the 'Attributes' Function: The error message suggests using the 'Attributes' function to edit the existing element. Instead of trying to create a new element, locate the existing one and modify its attributes as needed.
- Navigate to the relevant area in your SAP application where the element is defined.
- Use the search or filter functions to find the existing element.
- Once located, select the element and choose the 'Attributes' option to make the necessary changes.
Check for Duplicates: Before creating a new element, always check if an element with the same name or identifier already exists. This can save time and prevent errors.
Consult Documentation: If you are unsure about the existing elements or how to modify them, refer to the SAP documentation or help resources specific to the module you are working with.
Seek Help from Colleagues or SAP Support: If you are unable to resolve the issue, consider reaching out to colleagues who may have experience with the specific SAP module or contact SAP support for assistance.

SAP messages fall into 3 different categories: Error messages
(message type = E), Warnings (W) or Informational (I) messages.
An error message will prevent you from continuing your work - it is a hard stop and you need to fix the error before you can proceed. A warning message will stop your work, however, you can then bypass the warning by pressing the Enter key on your keyboard. That said, it is still good practice to investigate the cause of the warning message and address it. An information message will not stop your work and is truly just for informational purposes.
