  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message 37090 - Place the cursor on a field which can accept input ?

The SAP error message 37090, which states "Place the cursor on a field which can accept input," typically occurs when a user attempts to perform an action in the SAP GUI that requires input in a field that is not currently active or editable. This can happen in various scenarios, such as when trying to execute a function, save data, or navigate through a transaction.

    Cause:

    1. Non-Editable Field: The cursor is placed on a field that is not editable or does not accept input.
    2. Incorrect Focus: The focus is on a field that is not designed for user input, such as a display-only field or a header field.
    3. Transaction State: The transaction may be in a state where certain fields are locked or not available for input.
    4. Screen Layout: The screen layout may not be configured to allow input in the expected fields.

    Solution:

    1. Check Field Status: Ensure that the cursor is placed on a field that is intended for user input. Look for fields that are highlighted or have a white background, indicating they are editable.
    2. Navigate Correctly: Use the Tab key or mouse to navigate to the correct input field. Ensure that you are not trying to input data in a read-only field.
    3. Review Transaction Steps: Make sure you are following the correct sequence of steps in the transaction. Some fields may only become editable after certain actions are taken.
    4. Refresh the Screen: Sometimes, refreshing the screen (F5) or re-entering the transaction can resolve temporary issues.
    5. Check User Authorizations: Ensure that you have the necessary authorizations to edit the fields in question. Lack of permissions can sometimes lead to fields being non-editable.
    6. Consult Documentation: If you are unsure about which fields are editable, refer to the transaction documentation or help files for guidance.

    Related Information:

    • SAP Notes: Check SAP Notes for any known issues related to the specific transaction or error message.

SAP messages fall into 3 different categories: Error messages (message type = E), Warnings (W) or Informational (I) messages.

An error message will prevent you from continuing your work - it is a hard stop and you need to fix the error before you can proceed. A warning message will stop your work, however, you can then bypass the warning by pressing the Enter key on your keyboard. That said, it is still good practice to investigate the cause of the warning message and address it. An information message will not stop your work and is truly just for informational purposes.
