Message text: Change number & does not allow you to change BOMs
You want to use change number &V1& to change a BOM or to create a
variant for an existing BOM. However, this change number does not allow
changes to BOMs.
One of the following situations triggered this error message:
In the change master, the corresponding object type (eg. BOM,
routing/plan) is not active, so it is not possible to create or change
objects with this object type using this change number.
The corresponding object type is currently locked for the creation of
new data or changes.
Change number &V1& is the number of an ECR. In this case, an object
management record is required for the BOM. However, no object management
records exist for the selected ECR.
Check your entries.
If you really want to create your variant or make your changes using
this change number, consult your system manager responsible for change
master records to get the change number adapted to suit.

29040
- Change number & does not allow you to change BOMs ?The SAP error message 29040, which states "Change number & does not allow you to change BOMs," typically occurs when you are trying to make changes to a Bill of Materials (BOM) while a change number is active that restricts modifications. This is a part of the change management process in SAP, which is designed to control changes to BOMs and other master data.
Cause:
- Active Change Number: The change number you are using is set to prevent changes to the BOM. This is often the case when the change number is in a status that does not allow modifications (e.g., "Released" or "Closed").
- Change Number Configuration: The configuration of the change number may have been set to restrict changes to certain objects, including BOMs.
- Authorization Issues: The user may not have the necessary authorizations to make changes to the BOM under the specified change number.
Solution:
Check Change Number Status: Verify the status of the change number you are using. If it is in a status that does not allow changes, you may need to either:
- Change the status of the change number to allow modifications (if you have the necessary permissions).
- Use a different change number that is in a status that allows changes.
Create a New Change Number: If the current change number cannot be modified, consider creating a new change number that allows changes to the BOM.
Review Change Number Settings: Check the configuration settings for the change number in the system to ensure that it is set up correctly to allow changes to BOMs.
Authorization Check: Ensure that you have the necessary authorizations to make changes to the BOM under the specified change number. If not, contact your SAP security administrator to obtain the required permissions.
Consult Documentation: Refer to SAP documentation or your organization's internal guidelines regarding change management processes to ensure compliance with procedures.
