Message class: 0S - Messages for the SQL trace
Message number: 074
Message text: Switch off the trace or use another function -> Long text
The trace is still switched on for one or several trace types. The
system expects all trace types to be switched off before displaying the
trace list. You can switch the traces on and off using transaction
ST05.
If you want to generate the performance trace list with a trace still
switched on, you can choose "Performance Trace" -> Display Trace
Without First Switching Off". You can choose to display the basic or
extended list.
If you do want to dislay the performance trace without switching it
off, the end time for the trace list display will be determined and
then initialized once you display the list. You can overwrite this
time.
The system terminates trace display and allows you to restart.
To switch off all traces, use transaction ST05.
You can also use the function "Display Trace Without First Switching
Off".
The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

- Switch off the trace or use another function -> Long text ?The SAP error message 0S074, which states "Switch off the trace or use another function," typically occurs when a trace is active in the system, and the operation you are trying to perform is not allowed while tracing is enabled. This can happen in various contexts, such as during debugging or when using certain transaction codes that require a clean environment without traces.
Cause:
- Active Trace: The most common cause of this error is that a trace (such as SQL trace, performance trace, or debugging trace) is currently active in the system.
- Function Limitations: Some functions or transactions in SAP cannot be executed while a trace is running, as it may interfere with the operation or lead to performance issues.
Solution:
Deactivate the Trace:
- If you are using transaction codes like ST01 (System Trace), ST05 (SQL Trace), or similar, you need to deactivate the trace.
- To do this, go to the respective transaction and stop the trace. For example, in ST01, you can click on "Deactivate Trace" or "Stop Trace."
Use Another Function:
- If the operation you are trying to perform is not critical, consider using a different function or transaction that does not require tracing.
Check for Background Jobs:
- If the trace is being activated by a background job, you may need to check the job settings and deactivate the trace for that job.
Consult Documentation:
- Review the SAP documentation or help files related to the specific transaction or function you are trying to use to see if there are any known limitations regarding tracing.
