  • Show details Hide details
  • What causes this issue?

The memory area of the basis software for the GUI status is too small
for the requested status. The following is stored in this area:
    Administration information in fixed length
Menu structure, F keys and push buttons of a status
The texts of the complete interface (not just of the status)
The active and the requested Excluding list (<NP>SET PF-STATUS...
    EXCLUDING ...</>).

    System Response

Termination as presumably the system is unable to continue processing.

    How to fix this error?

A short-term solution might consist of leaving off the <NP>EXCLUDING</>
    for the current <NP>SET PF-STATUS...
Clear up the interface affected: in the Menu Painter (Transaction
    SE41), choose <LS>Utilities</> -> <LS>Unused objects</>.
If it is an interface with a large number of statuses, it may be
possible to take the interface apart. This is often possible for
interfaces belonging to a function group that supplies GUI statuses for
multiple programs (these programs call up function modules of the group
    that mainly contain a <NP>SET PF-STATUS</> command).
If the above solutions will not work, your system administrator will
have to enlarge the profile parameter "ztta/cua_area". Note that
profile parameter "ztta/short_area" must be at least 6 times as large
    as "ztta/cua_area".

  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message 00261 - Storage area for GUI status & & too small ?

The SAP error message "00261 Storage area for GUI status & & too small" typically indicates that the storage area allocated for the graphical user interface (GUI) status is insufficient to handle the data being processed. Cause:

    1. Insufficient Memory Allocation: The memory allocated for the GUI status is not enough to handle the current operation or data being processed.
    2. Large Data Volume: The operation may involve a large volume of data that exceeds the limits of the allocated storage area.
    3. Configuration Issues: There may be configuration settings in the SAP system that limit the size of the GUI status storage area.

    Solution:

    1. Increase Memory Allocation:

      • You may need to increase the memory allocation for the GUI status. This can typically be done by adjusting the parameters in the SAP system configuration.
      • Consult with your SAP Basis administrator to review and modify the relevant parameters in the instance profile (e.g., rdisp/PG_MAXFS).
    2. Optimize Data Handling:

      • If the operation involves displaying a large dataset, consider optimizing the data retrieval process. This could involve filtering the data to reduce the volume being processed at one time.
      • Use pagination or limit the number of records displayed in the GUI.
    3. Check for Updates:

      • Ensure that your SAP GUI and system are up to date. Sometimes, bugs or limitations in older versions can lead to such errors.

SAP messages fall into 3 different categories: Error messages (message type = E), Warnings (W) or Informational (I) messages.

An error message will prevent you from continuing your work - it is a hard stop and you need to fix the error before you can proceed. A warning message will stop your work, however, you can then bypass the warning by pressing the Enter key on your keyboard. That said, it is still good practice to investigate the cause of the warning message and address it. An information message will not stop your work and is truly just for informational purposes.
