Be sure to note the following restrictions when assigning

The variants can be ordered and received only as individual materials,
not at generic material level using the matrix of variants defined for
the generic material.
Hierarchical subitems (generic material - variant - empties) are not
supported in inventory management.
For both single materials and variants of a generic material, the
indicator <DS:DE.W_MITLEERG>W/ empties BOM</> must be set in the
material master record. In the standard R/3 System, this indicator
appears on the <LS>Basic Data</> screen in the material master.
