  • Message class: WXP - Retail Planning

  • Message number: 089

  • Message text: Classification system characteristic &3 has the wrong value check method

  • Show details Hide details
  • What causes this issue?

You have given planning characteristic &V2& the meaning "classification
system characteristic &V1&". Currently, only those classification
system characteristics, for which the value check uses an external
check table or a function module, are supported. The planning
characteristic for which characteristic planning is to be performed is,
however, assigned to classification system characteristic &V3&, for
which the value check uses a different method.

    System Response

Due to this inconsistency, the planning scenario cannot be activated.

    How to fix this error?

Change the check method for the classification system characteristic
&V3& to either "Check Table" or "Function Module", and then recheck the
    planning scenario.

    Procedure for System Administrators

The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message WXP089 - Classification system characteristic &3 has the wrong value check method ?

    SAP Error Message:
WXP089 Classification system characteristic &3 has the wrong value check method

    Cause

This warning message occurs in the SAP Classification system when a characteristic is assigned a value check method that is not appropriate or consistent with the characteristic's data type or configuration.

Specifically, the value check method defines how the system validates the values entered for a characteristic. If the characteristic's data type or domain does not match the assigned value check method, the system raises this warning.

    Common causes include:

    • The characteristic is assigned a value check method that expects a certain data type (e.g., single value, interval, or multiple values), but the characteristic's data type or domain does not support it.
    • The characteristic was created or modified incorrectly, leading to inconsistent settings.
    • The characteristic is linked to a classification system or class where the value check method is incompatible.

    Explanation of Value Check Methods

In SAP Classification, the value check method controls how values are validated:

    • 0 = No check
    • 1 = Single value check
    • 2 = Interval check
    • 3 = Multiple values check

If the characteristic's data type or domain does not support the assigned check method, the system issues this warning.

    Solution

    1. Check the characteristic's value check method:

      • Go to transaction CT04 (Change Characteristic).
      • Enter the characteristic name (the one referenced by &3 in the message).
      • Check the Value Check Method field.
      • Verify if the value check method is appropriate for the characteristic's data type.
    2. Adjust the value check method:

      • If the value check method is incorrect, change it to the correct one that matches the characteristic's data type.
      • For example, if the characteristic is of type CHAR and should accept single values, set the value check method to '1' (Single value check).
      • If intervals are not supported for the characteristic's data type, do not set the value check method to '2'.
    3. Check the characteristic's data type/domain:

      • Ensure the characteristic's data type/domain supports the intended value check method.
      • For example, interval checks are only valid for numeric or date/time data types.
    4. Save and test:

      • After correcting the value check method, save the characteristic.
      • Re-run the process that triggered the warning to confirm it is resolved.

    Additional Information

    • This message is a warning (WXP089), so it may not stop processing but indicates a potential inconsistency that could cause incorrect classification or data entry issues.
    • Consistent configuration of characteristics is important for reliable classification and variant configuration.
    • If you are unsure about the correct value check method, consult SAP documentation or your functional consultant.
    • Sometimes, this warning appears after transport or system copy if characteristic settings are inconsistent between systems.

    Summary

    Aspect Details
Message WXP089 Classification system characteristic &3 has the wrong value check method
