  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message WU502 - Material &1 can only be deleted using pricing reference material &2 ?

The SAP error message WU502 indicates that a specific material (denoted as &1) cannot be deleted because it is linked to a pricing reference material (denoted as &2). This typically occurs in the context of materials that are part of a pricing structure or have dependencies that prevent their deletion.

    Cause:

    1. Pricing Reference: The material you are trying to delete is being used as a reference for pricing in other materials or transactions. This means that the system has established a relationship between the two materials for pricing purposes.
    2. Dependencies: There may be other dependencies or configurations in the system that require the material to remain active, such as sales orders, purchase orders, or inventory records.
    3. Material Type: Certain material types in SAP have restrictions on deletion based on their configuration and usage in the system.

    Solution:

    1. Check Dependencies: Before attempting to delete the material, check if there are any existing dependencies or references to the material in question. This can include:

      • Sales orders
      • Purchase orders
      • Stock levels
      • Pricing conditions
      • BOMs (Bill of Materials)
      • Routing
    2. Remove References: If you find that the material is referenced in any of the above, you will need to remove those references first. This may involve:

      • Deleting or changing sales orders or purchase orders that reference the material.
      • Adjusting pricing conditions that use the material as a reference.
      • Updating or deleting BOMs or routings that include the material.
    3. Use the Pricing Reference Material: If the material is linked to a pricing reference material, you may need to consider whether you can delete or modify the pricing reference material instead.

    4. Consult Documentation: Review SAP documentation or consult with your SAP support team for specific instructions related to your system configuration and the materials involved.

    5. Transaction Codes: Use relevant transaction codes to check the material's status and dependencies:

      • MM03: Display Material
      • MM02: Change Material
      • ME23N: Display Purchase Order
      • VA03: Display Sales Order

    Related Information:

    • Material Master: Understanding the material master data and its configuration is crucial. The material master contains all the information about a material that is required to manage it throughout its lifecycle.
    • Pricing Conditions: Familiarize yourself with how pricing conditions are set up in SAP, as this will help you understand the implications of deleting a material that is used in pricing.
    • SAP Notes: Check for any relevant SAP Notes that may provide additional insights or solutions for this specific error message.
