What causes this issue?

At the moment, variants of a generic material can only be copied
to an item in a module either individually (explicitly) or all together
using the generic material number (implicitly). You cannot select
more than one variant of a generic material explicitly.

System Response

The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.
