  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message W8719 - Event & can only be a triggering event ?

    SAP Error Message:
W8719 - Event & can only be a triggering event

    Cause:

This warning message occurs in SAP Workflow when you try to assign an event as a result event or in a context where only triggering events are allowed, but the event you selected is defined as a triggering event only.

In SAP Workflow, events are categorized as:

    • Triggering Events: Events that start or trigger a workflow.
    • Result Events: Events that are outcomes or results of a workflow step.

The system enforces that certain events can only be used as triggering events and not as result events or vice versa.

    Explanation:

    • The event you are trying to use is defined as a triggering event.
    • You are trying to use it in a place where only result events are allowed (e.g., as a result event of a workflow step).
    • SAP Workflow does not allow a triggering event to be used as a result event.

    Solution:

    1. Check the event definition:

      • Go to transaction SWETYPV (Event Type Definition).
      • Find the event in question.
      • Verify if it is defined as a triggering event or result event.
    2. Use the event correctly:

      • If the event is a triggering event, use it only to start workflows or as a triggering event in the workflow.
      • If you need a result event, use an event defined as a result event or create a new event with the appropriate type.
    3. Adjust the workflow step or event assignment:

      • In the workflow builder (transaction SWDD), ensure that the event is assigned in the correct place.
      • For example, if you are assigning an event to a step’s result event, select an event defined as a result event.
    4. If necessary, create a new event:

      • If no suitable result event exists, create a new event in SWETYPV and define it as a result event.
      • Use this new event in your workflow step.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes:

      • SWETYPV - Event Type Definition (to check or create events)
      • SWDD - Workflow Builder (to design and edit workflows)
      • SWI1 - Workflow Log (to analyze workflow runs and errors)
    • SAP Help:

      • SAP Workflow documentation explains the difference between triggering and result events.
      • Events are linked to Business Object types and are used to start workflows or signal workflow steps.
    • Best Practice:

      • Always verify the event type before assigning it in workflow steps.
      • Maintain clear naming conventions for events to distinguish triggering and result events.

If you provide the exact context or transaction where you encountered this message, I can help with more specific guidance.
