  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message VQ281 - Consumption intervals are not used! ?

    SAP Error Message:
VQ281 - Consumption intervals are not used!

    Cause:

This error occurs in SAP when the system expects consumption intervals to be defined for a particular process (usually in the context of repetitive manufacturing or process orders), but no consumption intervals have been maintained or activated. Consumption intervals define the time periods during which components are consumed in production orders or process orders.

In other words, the system tries to determine when components should be withdrawn or consumed, but since no consumption intervals are set up, it cannot proceed and throws this error.

    When does it occur?

    • During order confirmation or goods issue for process or repetitive manufacturing orders.
    • When the system tries to calculate or post component consumption but finds no valid consumption intervals.
    • In repetitive manufacturing, consumption intervals are used to control the timing of component consumption relative to production.

    Solution:

    1. Maintain Consumption Intervals:

      • Go to the relevant customizing transaction for consumption intervals.
      • For repetitive manufacturing, use transaction OPPR or navigate via: SPRO -> Production -> Repetitive Manufacturing -> Control -> Define Consumption Intervals
      • Define the consumption intervals for the relevant production version or order type.
      • Ensure intervals cover the entire production period and are correctly assigned.
    2. Check Production Version:

      • Verify that the production version assigned to the order has consumption intervals maintained.
      • If no production version is assigned, assign one that has consumption intervals.
    3. Check Order Type Settings:

      • Some order types require consumption intervals to be maintained.
      • Review order type configuration to ensure it aligns with consumption interval requirements.
    4. Activate Consumption Intervals:

      • Sometimes intervals are maintained but not activated.
      • Make sure the intervals are active and valid for the order dates.
    5. Review Master Data:

      • Check material master and BOM to ensure they are consistent with consumption interval requirements.

    Additional Information:

    • Consumption intervals are time frames that specify when components are consumed during the production process.
    • They are particularly important in repetitive manufacturing and process orders where consumption is spread over time.
    • Without consumption intervals, the system cannot determine the correct timing for component withdrawals, leading to this error.
    • Proper maintenance of consumption intervals ensures accurate inventory management and production costing.

    Summary:

    Aspect Details
Error Message VQ281 - Consumption intervals are not used!
Cause No consumption intervals maintained or activated for the production version/order type.
Solution Maintain and activate consumption intervals in customizing (SPRO) for the relevant order type or production version.
Transactions OPPR (Define consumption intervals), CO02 (Change order), SPRO (Customizing path)
Related Areas Repetitive manufacturing, process orders, production versions, BOM
