What causes this issue?

You have entered a material number, consisting solely of figures.
The material type you have chosen, however, is set up in Customizing in
such a way that external number assignment is carried out without
checking. For these materials, a purely numerical material number is
not allowed.

System Response

The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.
