  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message USMD2183 - Hierarchy names can not be removed; choose Delete ?

The SAP error message USMD2183 indicates that you are trying to remove a hierarchy name in a way that is not allowed. This typically occurs in the context of SAP Master Data Governance (MDG) when you are working with hierarchies in the data model.

    Cause:

The error occurs because the system does not allow the direct removal of hierarchy names. Instead, it requires you to delete the hierarchy itself. This is a safeguard to ensure data integrity and prevent accidental loss of important hierarchical structures.

    Solution:

To resolve the error, you should follow these steps:

    1. Navigate to the Hierarchy Management: Go to the relevant area in SAP where you manage hierarchies (e.g., in the MDG application).

    2. Select the Hierarchy: Identify the hierarchy that you want to delete.

    3. Choose Delete Option: Instead of trying to remove the hierarchy name, look for a "Delete" option. This is usually available in the context menu or as a button in the hierarchy management interface.

    4. Confirm Deletion: Confirm the deletion when prompted. Be aware that deleting a hierarchy may have implications for any associated master data.

    5. Check for Dependencies: Before deleting, ensure that there are no dependencies or references to the hierarchy in other parts of the system that could be affected.

    Related Information:

    • Documentation: Refer to the SAP Help Portal or the specific documentation for your version of SAP MDG for detailed instructions on managing hierarchies.
    • Transaction Codes: Familiarize yourself with relevant transaction codes (like MDG_MAINTAIN) that may help you navigate to the hierarchy management section.
    • User Permissions: Ensure that you have the necessary permissions to delete hierarchies in the system.
    • Testing: If possible, test the deletion in a development or test environment before applying changes in production to avoid unintended consequences.

If you continue to experience issues or if the hierarchy is critical, consider consulting with your SAP support team or a functional consultant who specializes in SAP MDG.
