  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message TD347 - Device type definition must not be changed ?

The SAP error message TD347 ("Device type definition must not be changed") typically occurs when there is an attempt to modify a device type that is already in use or has been defined in a way that does not allow changes. This can happen in various scenarios, such as when trying to change printer settings or device configurations in the SAP system.

    Cause:

    1. Locked Device Type: The device type you are trying to modify is locked or has been set to a status that prevents changes.
    2. In Use: The device type is currently in use by one or more printers or output devices, which prevents modifications.
    3. Authorization Issues: The user may not have the necessary authorizations to make changes to the device type.
    4. System Configuration: The system configuration may restrict changes to certain device types due to system settings or policies.

    Solution:

    1. Check Device Usage: Verify if the device type is currently assigned to any active printers or output devices. If it is, you may need to reassign those devices to a different device type before making changes.
    2. Unlock Device Type: If the device type is locked, you may need to unlock it. This can typically be done by an administrator or someone with the appropriate permissions.
    3. Review Authorizations: Ensure that you have the necessary authorizations to modify device types. If not, contact your SAP security administrator to obtain the required permissions.
    4. Use Transaction SPAD: Go to transaction SPAD (Spool Administration) to manage device types. From there, you can check the status of the device type and see if it is in use or locked.
    5. Create a New Device Type: If changes are necessary and cannot be made to the existing device type, consider creating a new device type with the desired settings and then reassigning printers to this new type.
