PIC01201
- Material & is a member of a supersession chain ?The SAP error message PIC01201 indicates that the material you are trying to process is part of a supersession chain. This typically occurs in scenarios where materials are replaced or upgraded by newer versions, and the system is enforcing rules related to these relationships.
Cause:
- Supersession Chain: The material in question is linked to a supersession chain, meaning it has been replaced or is set to be replaced by another material. This is common in industries where products are frequently updated or improved.
- Configuration Settings: The configuration settings in SAP may be set to prevent certain actions on materials that are part of a supersession chain to maintain data integrity and avoid confusion in inventory management.
Solution:
- Check Supersession Chain: Review the supersession chain for the material. You can do this by navigating to the material master data and checking the "Supersession" tab. Identify the current active material and its relationship to the superseded material.
- Use the Correct Material: If you are trying to perform an action (like creating a sales order or production order) on the superseded material, switch to the current active material in the chain.
- Adjust Configuration (if necessary): If you have the necessary permissions and it is appropriate for your business process, you may consider adjusting the configuration settings related to supersession handling. However, this should be done with caution and ideally in consultation with your SAP administrator or a functional consultant.
- Consult Documentation: Refer to SAP documentation or help resources for more detailed guidance on handling materials in supersession chains.

If the issue persists after following these steps, it may be beneficial to consult with your SAP support team or a functional consultant who specializes in material management.
