Message text: Coefficient and fixed density/gravity only allowed for chemicals
You attempted to enter a thermal expansion coefficient (quantity
conversion coefficient) and/or a fixed density for a material that has
been assigned to a non-chemical conversion group.
The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.
Change the conversion group of the material to a chemical conversion
group (234C, 534C or 56C) or leave the entries blank. Removing the
conversion group is only possible if no stock has been posted yet.

O3138
- Coefficient and fixed density/gravity only allowed for chemicals ?The SAP error message O3138 indicates that there is an issue with the configuration of materials in the system, specifically related to the density or gravity settings for materials that are not classified as chemicals. This error typically arises when you attempt to assign a coefficient or fixed density/gravity to a material that is not categorized as a chemical substance in the SAP system.
Cause:
- Material Classification: The material you are trying to configure is not classified as a chemical. In SAP, certain properties like density or gravity are only applicable to materials that are classified as chemicals.
- Incorrect Data Entry: There may be incorrect data entries in the material master record, particularly in the classification or basic data views.
- Configuration Settings: The system settings or configuration may not allow for the assignment of density/gravity to non-chemical materials.
Solution:
Check Material Classification:
- Verify the classification of the material in the material master. Ensure that it is classified as a chemical if you intend to assign density or gravity values.
- If the material is indeed a chemical, ensure that the appropriate classification is set in the material master.
Review Material Master Data:
- Go to the material master record (transaction code MM03) and check the Basic Data and Classification views.
- Ensure that the fields for density and gravity are filled out correctly and that they are applicable to the material type.
Adjust Configuration:
- If the material should not be classified as a chemical but still requires density/gravity values, consider adjusting the configuration settings or the material type to allow for these properties.
- Consult with your SAP configuration team to see if there are any settings that can be adjusted to accommodate your requirements.
Consult Documentation:
- Review SAP documentation or help resources for further guidance on material classification and the properties that can be assigned to different material types.
