  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message MW158 - Message determination cannot be deactivated ?

The SAP error message MW158 ("Message determination cannot be deactivated") typically occurs in the context of message determination for output processing in SAP, particularly when dealing with sales documents, deliveries, or other transactional documents. This error indicates that the system is unable to deactivate the message determination for a specific output type due to certain conditions or settings.

    Causes:

    1. Output Type Configuration: The output type may be configured in such a way that it cannot be deactivated. This could be due to settings in the output determination procedure or the message control settings.
    2. Document Status: The document (e.g., sales order, delivery) may be in a status that does not allow changes to the output determination settings.
    3. Customizing Settings: There may be specific customizing settings in the SAP system that enforce the activation of message determination for certain output types.
    4. Dependencies on Other Outputs: The output type may have dependencies on other output types or conditions that prevent it from being deactivated.

    Solutions:

    1. Check Output Type Configuration:

      • Go to the output type configuration in SPRO (Transaction code: SPRO).
      • Navigate to the relevant area (e.g., Sales and Distribution > Basic Functions > Output Control > Output Determination > Maintain Output Types).
      • Review the settings for the output type in question and ensure that it is set up correctly.
    2. Review Document Status:

      • Check the status of the document you are working with. If it is already processed or in a completed status, you may not be able to change the output determination settings.
      • If necessary, create a new document or change the status to allow for modifications.
    3. Customizing Settings:

      • Review the customizing settings related to message determination. Ensure that there are no mandatory settings that enforce the activation of the output type.
      • If you have access, consult with your SAP Basis or functional team to understand if there are any system-wide settings affecting this behavior.
    4. Check for Dependencies:

      • Investigate if the output type is linked to other output types or conditions that may prevent it from being deactivated.
      • Ensure that there are no active conditions or records that require the output type to remain active.
    5. Consult Documentation:

      • Refer to SAP documentation or help resources for specific guidance on the output determination process and error handling.
    6. SAP Notes:

      • Check the SAP Support Portal for any relevant SAP Notes that may address this specific error message or provide additional troubleshooting steps.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes: Familiarize yourself with relevant transaction codes such as NACE (for output determination) and SPRO (for customizing).
    • Output Determination Procedures: Understand how output determination procedures work in SAP and how they can be configured for different document types.
    • User Authorizations: Ensure that you have the necessary authorizations to make changes to output types and document settings.
