What causes this issue?

You wanted to access the material movements for a
<DS:GLOS.generic_material>generic material</>. However, this is
possible only for the variants of a generic material since material
documents are updated only for the variants.

System Response

The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

How to fix this error?

If you want to view the material movements for the individual variants,
branch to the stock display for the individual variant via the variant
split, where you can choose <LS>Material movements</> to display the
material movements for the variant concerned.
