  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message KN229 - Material & can not be converted from unit of measure & into & ?

The SAP error message KN229 indicates that there is an issue with the conversion of units of measure for a specific material. This error typically arises when the system is unable to convert the quantity of a material from one unit of measure (UoM) to another due to a missing or incorrect configuration in the unit of measure settings.

    Cause:

    1. Missing Unit of Measure Conversion: The conversion factor between the two units of measure is not defined in the material master data.
    2. Incorrect Unit of Measure: The unit of measure being used may not be valid for the material in question.
    3. Material Master Configuration: The material master may not be properly configured to handle the specified units of measure.
    4. Data Entry Error: There may be a mistake in the data entry where the wrong unit of measure is being used.

    Solution:

    1. Check Material Master Data:

      • Go to the material master record (transaction code MM03).
      • Check the "Basic Data" and "Sales Org. Data" views to ensure that the units of measure are correctly defined.
      • Verify that the conversion factors between the base unit of measure and the alternative units of measure are correctly set up.
    2. Define Unit of Measure Conversion:

      • If the conversion is missing, you can define it in the material master by going to the "Units of Measure" tab and adding the necessary conversion factors.
      • Ensure that the base unit of measure is correctly defined and that all necessary alternative units of measure are included.
    3. Check UoM Settings:

      • Ensure that the units of measure being used are valid and active in the system. You can check this in the configuration settings (transaction code OMN1 for unit of measure settings).
    4. Review Transaction Data:

      • If the error occurs during a specific transaction (like sales order creation or goods movement), review the transaction data to ensure that the correct units of measure are being used.
    5. Consult Documentation:

      • If you are unsure about the correct units of measure or conversion factors, consult the SAP documentation or your organization's SAP support team for guidance.

    Related Information:

    • Unit of Measure (UoM): In SAP, each material can have multiple units of measure defined, including a base unit and alternative units. Proper configuration is essential for accurate inventory management and reporting.
    • Material Master: The material master is a central repository of information about materials in SAP, and it plays a crucial role in various processes such as procurement, inventory management, and sales.
