Message class: K5 - CO Reconciliation Ledger
Message number: 041
Message text: Period lock is locked by user &.
DEFINE &USER& = &V1&
INCLUDE MESSAGE_ENQUEUE_USER OBJECT DOKU ID TX
You want to make subsequent postings to the reconciliation ledger. To
prevent new CO documents from being posted while you make the subsequent
posting, the corresponding periods must be locked for all transactions.
The SAP system checks whether the affected periods are locked. To
prevent removal of the lock during the run, maintenance of the period
lock must also be locked.
This means that no other user can change (reset) the period lock as long
as subsequent postings are being made to the reconciliation ledger.
The SAP system cannot lock maintenance of the period lock.
Start the subsequent posting at a later time, or contact user &V1& to
request release of the period lock.

- Period lock is locked by user &. ?The SAP error message K5041, which states "Period lock is locked by user &," typically occurs in the context of controlling (CO) when a user attempts to post or make changes in a period that is currently locked by another user. This locking mechanism is in place to prevent inconsistencies and ensure data integrity during financial closing processes.
Cause:
- Period Locking: The period in question is locked for posting by another user. This is often done during month-end or year-end closing activities to prevent changes to financial data.
- User Session: The user who locked the period may still have an active session, or they may not have released the lock after completing their tasks.
- Configuration Settings: The system may be configured to lock periods for specific users or roles, which can lead to this error if the user does not have the necessary permissions.
Solution:
- Identify the Locking User: Check who has locked the period. This can often be done by using transaction codes like
SM12
(to view lock entries) orSM21
(to check system logs).- Contact the User: If you identify the user who has locked the period, reach out to them to see if they can release the lock.
- Release the Lock: If the user is unavailable or has left the session, a system administrator can manually release the lock using transaction
SM12
. However, this should be done with caution to avoid data inconsistencies.- Check Configuration: Review the configuration settings for period locking in the controlling module to ensure they align with your organization's processes and that users have the appropriate permissions.
- Wait for the Lock to Expire: If the lock is temporary and the user is expected to finish their tasks soon, it may be best to wait until the lock is released automatically.
