  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message FR072 - Target entry entered; long text will not be copied ?

The SAP error message FR072 ("Target entry entered; long text will not be copied") typically occurs in the context of document processing, particularly when dealing with long texts in SAP. This message indicates that the system has detected that a long text is not being copied to the target entry because a target entry has already been specified.

    Cause:

    1. Target Entry Specified: The error arises when a target entry (like a purchase order, sales order, etc.) is already defined, and the system is unable to copy the long text from the source document to the target document.
    2. Long Text Handling: SAP has specific rules for handling long texts, and if the target entry is already set, the system may not allow the copying of long texts to avoid overwriting or conflicts.

    Solution:

    1. Check Target Entry: Review the target entry to ensure that it is correctly set up and that you want to copy the long text to it. If the target entry is not needed, you may want to remove it or change it.
    2. Manual Entry: If the long text is essential, consider manually entering the long text into the target entry instead of relying on the automatic copy function.
    3. Adjust Settings: Depending on your role and permissions, you may need to check the configuration settings related to long text handling in the relevant SAP module (e.g., MM, SD). Consult with your SAP administrator or functional consultant to see if any adjustments can be made.
    4. SAP Notes: Check for any relevant SAP Notes or updates that might address this issue. Sometimes, specific versions of SAP may have known issues that are resolved in later patches.

    Related Information:

    • Long Texts in SAP: Long texts are often used in various SAP documents to provide additional information. They can be created in different formats and are typically stored in a separate text table.
    • Transaction Codes: Familiarize yourself with transaction codes related to the document type you are working with (e.g., ME21N for purchase orders, VA01 for sales orders) to better understand how long texts are managed.
    • User Documentation: Review SAP user documentation or training materials that cover long text handling and copying procedures for the specific module you are working with.

If the issue persists after trying the above solutions, it may be beneficial to consult with your SAP support team or reach out to SAP support for further assistance.

SAP messages fall into 3 different categories: Error messages (message type = E), Warnings (W) or Informational (I) messages.

An error message will prevent you from continuing your work - it is a hard stop and you need to fix the error before you can proceed. A warning message will stop your work, however, you can then bypass the warning by pressing the Enter key on your keyboard. That said, it is still good practice to investigate the cause of the warning message and address it. An information message will not stop your work and is truly just for informational purposes.
