The SAP error message EL420 indicates an overflow condition in the context of a measurement result (MR) that exceeds the expected limits during a quality inspection process. This error typically arises in the context of Quality Management (QM) within SAP, particularly when dealing with inspection lots and measurement documents.

    Cause:

    1. Measurement Result Exceeds Limits: The error occurs when the measurement result recorded for a characteristic exceeds the defined upper limit or threshold for that characteristic in the inspection plan.
    2. Data Type Limitations: The data type used for storing measurement results may have a limited range, leading to overflow if the value exceeds this range.
    3. Incorrect Configuration: The inspection characteristics may not be configured correctly, leading to unrealistic expectations for measurement results.
    4. Unit of Measure Issues: There may be discrepancies in the unit of measure used for the measurement results compared to what is defined in the inspection plan.

    Solution:

    1. Check Measurement Results: Review the measurement results entered for the inspection lot. Ensure that they are within the defined limits set in the inspection plan.
    2. Inspect Inspection Plan: Verify the inspection plan settings for the characteristic in question. Check the upper and lower limits defined for the measurement.
    3. Adjust Data Types: If the measurement results are valid but exceed the limits due to data type constraints, consider adjusting the data type or the field length in the configuration.
    4. Review Units of Measure: Ensure that the units of measure used for the measurement results are consistent with those defined in the inspection plan.
    5. Correct Configuration: If the inspection characteristics are incorrectly configured, update the configuration to reflect the correct limits and data types.
