  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message EH049 - Mass activity &1 &2, started by &3 is already active ?

The SAP error message EH049 indicates that a mass activity (such as a mass change or mass processing task) is already active and cannot be started again until the current instance is completed. This error typically occurs in the context of mass processing functions in SAP, where multiple users or processes may attempt to execute the same mass activity simultaneously.

    Cause:

    1. Concurrent Execution: The most common cause of this error is that the mass activity you are trying to initiate is already running. This can happen if another user or process has started the same mass activity.
    2. Long-Running Processes: If the previous instance of the mass activity is taking longer than expected to complete, it may still be active when you attempt to start it again.
    3. System Locking: SAP may have internal locks that prevent the same mass activity from being executed multiple times concurrently.

    Solution:

    1. Check Active Processes: Use transaction codes like SM37 (Job Monitoring) to check if the mass activity is currently running. Look for jobs related to the mass activity you are trying to start.
    2. Wait for Completion: If you find that the mass activity is indeed running, you may need to wait for it to complete before attempting to start it again.
    3. Terminate the Process: If the process is stuck or taking too long, and you have the necessary authorizations, you can terminate the job from SM37. Be cautious with this approach, as it may lead to data inconsistencies.
    4. Review Logs: Check the logs for the mass activity to understand why it is taking longer than expected or if there are any errors that need to be addressed.
    5. Consult with Colleagues: If you are in a multi-user environment, check with your colleagues to see if someone else is running the same mass activity.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes: Familiarize yourself with transaction codes like SM37 for job monitoring, SM21 for system logs, and ST22 for dump analysis.
    • SAP Notes: Check SAP Notes for any known issues or patches related to the specific mass activity you are working with.
    • Documentation: Review the documentation for the specific mass activity to understand its behavior and any limitations regarding concurrent execution.

If the issue persists after following these steps, it may be beneficial to reach out to your SAP Basis or technical support team for further assistance.
