Message text: Inconsistent master data for assembly &
Direct production is indicated for assembly &V1& in the material
master. In the BOM for material &V2& the assembly has been entered as a
non-stock item and is therefore defined as directly procured.
The system terminates, as it can not decide whether assembly &V1&
should now be directly produced or directly procured.
Carry out one of the following two measures:
If assembly &V1& should be directly produced, change the item category
in the BOM for material &V2& to 'materials kept in stock' for assembly
&V1&.
If assembly &V1& should be directly procured, change either the special
procurement key in the material master, or hide the explosion of the
related BOM, by entering a suitable quantity structure control for
assembly &V1& in the BOM for material &V2&.
The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

CO657
- Inconsistent master data for assembly & ?The SAP error message CO657 indicates that there is inconsistent master data for an assembly in the context of production planning and control. This error typically arises when there are discrepancies in the master data related to the bill of materials (BOM), routing, or other related components that are necessary for the assembly process.
Causes of CO657 Error
Inconsistent BOM: The bill of materials for the assembly may not match the components defined in the system. This can happen if the BOM has been changed but not updated in all relevant areas.
Routing Issues: The routing for the assembly may not be correctly defined or may not match the BOM, leading to inconsistencies.
Missing or Incorrect Master Data: There may be missing or incorrect master data for components, such as material master records, which can lead to inconsistencies.
Versioning Issues: If different versions of the BOM or routing are being used, it can lead to conflicts and inconsistencies.
Plant-Specific Data: If the assembly is plant-specific, ensure that the master data is correctly maintained for the specific plant.
Solutions to CO657 Error
Check BOM and Routing: Review the BOM and routing for the assembly to ensure that they are consistent and correctly defined. Make sure that all components are included and that their quantities are correct.
Update Master Data: If there are discrepancies, update the master data for the assembly and its components. This may involve creating or modifying material master records, BOMs, or routings.
Check for Version Conflicts: Ensure that the correct version of the BOM and routing is being used. If necessary, update the version to the latest one.
Use Transaction Codes: Utilize transaction codes such as CS03 (Display BOM), CA03 (Display Routing), and CS12 (BOM Comparison) to analyze and compare the BOM and routing data.
Consult Documentation: Refer to SAP documentation or help files for specific guidance on resolving inconsistencies in master data.
Run Consistency Checks: Use SAP tools to run consistency checks on the master data to identify and rectify any inconsistencies.
Contact SAP Support: If the issue persists after checking and updating the master data, consider reaching out to SAP support for further assistance.
Related Information
Transaction Codes: Familiarize yourself with relevant transaction codes such as CS01 (Create BOM), CS02 (Change BOM), CA01 (Create Routing), and CA02 (Change Routing) for managing BOMs and routings.
Master Data Management: Understanding the principles of master data management in SAP can help prevent such inconsistencies in the future.
Training and Documentation: Consider training sessions or reviewing SAP documentation related to production planning and control to better understand how to manage master data effectively.
By addressing the underlying causes of the CO657 error and ensuring that all master data is consistent and correctly maintained, you can resolve the issue and prevent it from occurring in the future.
