  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message CN273 - Controlling area &1 of the plant differs from that of the proj./SO (&2) ?

The SAP error message CN273 indicates that there is a mismatch between the controlling area of the plant and the controlling area of the project or sales order (SO) you are trying to work with. This error typically arises in the context of project system (PS) or controlling (CO) modules when you attempt to perform an action that requires consistency between these entities.

    Cause:

    1. Different Controlling Areas: The plant you are using is assigned to a different controlling area than the project or sales order you are trying to reference. Each plant in SAP is linked to a specific controlling area, and if they do not match, this error will occur.
    2. Configuration Issues: There may be configuration issues in the system where the controlling areas for the plant and the project/SO are not aligned correctly.
    3. Data Entry Errors: Incorrect data entry when creating or modifying the project or sales order can lead to this mismatch.

    Solution:

    1. Check Plant and Project/SO Configuration:

      • Verify the controlling area assigned to the plant in the plant master data (transaction code OX10).
      • Check the controlling area assigned to the project or sales order (transaction codes like CJ03 for projects or VA03 for sales orders).
      • Ensure that both the plant and the project/SO are assigned to the same controlling area.
    2. Adjust the Project/SO or Plant:

      • If the project or sales order is incorrectly assigned to a different controlling area, you may need to create a new project or sales order that is linked to the correct controlling area.
      • Alternatively, if the plant needs to be changed, you may need to reassign it to the correct controlling area, but this may require additional configuration and should be done with caution.
    3. Consult with Configuration Team:

      • If you are unsure about making changes, consult with your SAP configuration team or a functional consultant who can help ensure that the settings are correct and aligned with your business processes.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes:
      • OX10: Maintain Plant
      • CJ03: Display Project
      • VA03: Display Sales Order
    • SAP Notes: Check for any relevant SAP Notes that may address this specific error or provide additional guidance.
    • Documentation: Review SAP documentation related to project systems and controlling areas for a better understanding of how these elements interact.

By following these steps, you should be able to resolve the CN273 error and ensure that your plant, project, and sales order configurations are consistent.
