Message number: 542
Message text: Status & can only be set by the system
You can save an allocation without leaving the value assignment screen.
However, if the class contains characteristics which have the <ZH>Entry
required</> indicator, the system automatically sets the status of the
allocation to "incomplete". In classification, the system
<ZH>internally</> distinguishes between an "incomplete" status which is
set by the user and an "incomplete" status which is set by the system.
The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

CL542
- Status & can only be set by the system ?The SAP error message CL542, which states "Status & can only be set by the system," typically occurs in the context of handling classification data in SAP. This error indicates that the status you are trying to set for a classification object (like a class or characteristic) is restricted and can only be modified by the system itself, not by users or through standard transactions.
Cause:
- System-Defined Status: The status you are trying to change is defined by the system and is not meant to be altered manually. For example, certain statuses may be automatically set based on the lifecycle of the object (e.g., when an object is created, changed, or deleted).
- Authorization Issues: Sometimes, the user may not have the necessary authorizations to change certain statuses, leading to this error.
- Incorrect Transaction: The transaction or method being used to change the status may not be appropriate for the object in question.
Solution:
- Check the Status: Review the status you are trying to set and ensure that it is not a system-defined status. Refer to the SAP documentation or classification settings to understand which statuses are user-modifiable.
- Use Appropriate Transactions: Ensure you are using the correct transaction codes or methods to change the status. For example, if you are trying to change the status of a class or characteristic, use the appropriate classification transaction (like CL02 for changing classes).
- Review Authorizations: Check if your user role has the necessary authorizations to change the status. If not, you may need to contact your SAP security administrator to adjust your permissions.
- Consult Documentation: Refer to SAP Help or documentation specific to the classification system to understand the implications of the status you are trying to change.
