  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message CJ168 - Activities in network "&" are assigned to several WBS elements ?

The SAP error message CJ168 indicates that there are activities in a network that are assigned to multiple Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) elements. This situation typically arises in project management within SAP, particularly when dealing with project networks and their associated activities.

    Cause:

    1. Multiple WBS Assignments: The primary cause of this error is that the same activity in a network is assigned to more than one WBS element. In SAP, each activity should ideally be linked to a single WBS element to maintain clear project accounting and reporting.
    2. Incorrect Configuration: There may be a configuration issue or a misunderstanding of how to properly assign activities to WBS elements.
    3. Data Entry Errors: Manual errors during data entry can lead to activities being incorrectly assigned to multiple WBS elements.

    Solution:

    1. Review Activity Assignments: Check the assignments of the activities in the network. You can do this by navigating to the network in question and reviewing the activity details to see which WBS elements are assigned.
    2. Reassign Activities: If you find that an activity is indeed assigned to multiple WBS elements, you will need to reassign it to the correct WBS element. This can be done by:
      • Going to the network activity in the SAP GUI.
      • Editing the activity and changing the WBS element assignment to the correct one.
    3. Delete Duplicate Assignments: If there are duplicate assignments, remove the unnecessary ones to ensure that each activity is linked to only one WBS element.
    4. Check for Dependencies: Ensure that the dependencies and relationships between activities and WBS elements are correctly defined to avoid future issues.
    5. Consult Documentation: Refer to SAP documentation or your organization's guidelines on project management and network planning to ensure compliance with best practices.

SAP messages fall into 3 different categories: Error messages (message type = E), Warnings (W) or Informational (I) messages.

An error message will prevent you from continuing your work - it is a hard stop and you need to fix the error before you can proceed. A warning message will stop your work, however, you can then bypass the warning by pressing the Enter key on your keyboard. That said, it is still good practice to investigate the cause of the warning message and address it. An information message will not stop your work and is truly just for informational purposes.
