What causes this issue?

You want to extend a BOM by one
<DS:GLOS.3526C3FAAFAB52B9E10000009B38F974>alternative</> (see
<DS:GLOS.3526C453AFAB52B9E10000009B38F974>multiple BOM</>). This is not
possible for one of the following reasons.
Since this BOM is a <DS:GLOS.3526C4D3AFAB52B9E10000009B38F974>variant
BOM</> this is no longer possible.
You cannot create any alternatives in your system because multiple BOMs
have been set to inactive in Customizing.

The system cannot create an alternative.

How to fix this error?

Check the material number and enter another material number if
necessary to create a new variant.

Procedure for System Administrators

Check whether alternatives are allowed in your SAP system. To do so,
call up Customizing for bills of materials, and choose the activity
<LS>Control Data for BOMs -> Set Modification Parameters</>. If the
<LS><DS:DE.CS_MULFL>Multiple BOM is inactive</></> parameter is
selected, you cannot create any alternatives in your system.
