  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message 60797 - Assigned number & is in critical area of number range & ?

The SAP error message 60797, which states "Assigned number & is in critical area of number range &," typically indicates that a number assigned to a document or object is in a critical area of the number range. This means that the number range is nearing its limit or has been configured in such a way that certain numbers are reserved for specific purposes, and the assigned number falls within that reserved range.

    Cause:

    1. Number Range Configuration: The number range for the object (e.g., invoices, purchase orders) has been set up with critical areas that restrict the use of certain numbers.
    2. Exhaustion of Number Range: The number range is close to being exhausted, and the system is trying to assign a number that is not allowed.
    3. Custom Development: If there are custom developments or modifications in the system, they might be incorrectly handling number assignments.

    Solution:

    1. Check Number Range Configuration:

      • Go to the transaction code SNRO (Number Range Objects).
      • Find the relevant number range object and check its configuration.
      • Ensure that the number range is properly defined and that the critical areas are set up correctly.
    2. Adjust Number Range:

      • If the number range is exhausted, you may need to extend it. This can be done by:
        • Increasing the upper limit of the number range.
        • Creating a new number range if necessary.
      • Ensure that the new range does not conflict with existing critical areas.
    3. Review Critical Areas:

      • If the assigned number is in a critical area, you may need to adjust the critical area settings to allow for more flexibility in number assignments.
    4. Consult Documentation:

      • Review SAP documentation or consult with your SAP Basis or functional team to understand the implications of changing number range settings.
    5. Testing:

      • After making changes, perform thorough testing to ensure that the number assignment works as expected and does not lead to further issues.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes:
      • SNRO: To manage number range objects.
      • SNUM: To display number ranges.
    • SAP Notes: Check for any relevant SAP Notes that might address specific issues related to number ranges and error 60797.
    • User Authorization: Ensure that you have the necessary authorizations to make changes to number ranges.
