  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message 5A393 - Objects can only be moved within their branch and object type. ?

The SAP error message 5A393 indicates that you are trying to move an object (such as a transport request, change request, or other development objects) to a different branch or object type than it currently belongs to. This is a restriction in SAP to maintain the integrity of the object hierarchy and ensure that objects are only moved within their designated branches.

    Cause:

    1. Branch Restriction: The object you are trying to move is part of a specific branch in the transport directory, and you are attempting to move it to a different branch.
    2. Object Type Mismatch: The object type you are trying to move does not match the type of the target location.
    3. Transport Request Issues: If you are working with transport requests, the request may be locked or not properly released for movement.

    Solution:

    1. Check Object Branch: Verify the current branch of the object you are trying to move. Ensure that you are moving it within the same branch.
    2. Correct Object Type: Ensure that the target location is compatible with the object type you are trying to move. If necessary, create a new transport request or change request that matches the target type.
    3. Use the Correct Transport Request: If you are moving objects between systems, ensure that you are using the correct transport request that is intended for that purpose.
    4. Release and Unlock: If the transport request is locked, ensure that it is released and not in a locked state. You may need to check with your Basis team or the person responsible for transport management.
    5. Consult Documentation: Refer to SAP documentation or your organization's guidelines for moving objects to ensure compliance with best practices.

    Related Information:

    • Transport Management System (TMS): Understanding how TMS works in SAP can help you manage transports more effectively.
    • Change Management: Familiarize yourself with the change management processes in your organization to avoid similar issues in the future.
    • SAP Notes: Check for any relevant SAP Notes that might address this specific error or provide additional context or solutions.

If the issue persists after following these steps, consider reaching out to your SAP Basis team or SAP support for further assistance.
