Smart SAP Assistant

  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message 29120 - Material status & '&' is not selected for BOM item (plant &) ?

The SAP error message 29120 indicates that the material status for a Bill of Materials (BOM) item is not selected for the specified plant. This error typically arises when you are trying to create or modify a BOM, and the material associated with the BOM item has a status that restricts its use in the BOM.

    Cause:

    1. Material Status: The material status assigned to the BOM item may restrict its use in production or planning. This could be due to various reasons, such as the material being inactive, blocked for procurement, or restricted for certain operations.
    2. Plant-Specific Settings: The material status may be plant-specific, meaning that it is valid for one plant but not for another. If the BOM is being created or modified for a different plant, the status may not be applicable.
    3. Configuration Issues: There may be configuration settings in the material master or BOM settings that are causing this restriction.

    Solution:

    1. Check Material Status:

      • Go to the material master (transaction code MM03) and check the material status for the relevant material in the specified plant.
      • If the status is set to restrict usage, consider changing it to a status that allows the material to be used in BOMs.
    2. Change Material Status:

      • If you have the necessary authorizations, you can change the material status using transaction code MM02. Make sure to select a status that permits the material to be used in BOMs.
    3. Review BOM Settings:

      • Check the BOM settings to ensure that there are no restrictions that would prevent the BOM from being created or modified with the current material status.
    4. Consult with Your SAP Administrator:

      • If you are unsure about changing the material status or if the status is set correctly, consult with your SAP administrator or a colleague who has expertise in material management.
    5. Check for Related Notes:

      • Sometimes, SAP provides notes or patches that address specific issues. Check the SAP Support Portal for any relevant notes related to this error message.
