  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message 29117 - Material type & not supported for BOM item ?

The SAP error message 29117, which states "Material type & not supported for BOM item," typically occurs when you are trying to create or modify a Bill of Materials (BOM) in SAP, and the material type of one of the items in the BOM is not allowed for that specific BOM configuration.

    Cause:

    1. Material Type Restrictions: Each BOM can only include certain material types. If the material type of the item you are trying to add to the BOM is not configured to be used in that BOM, you will encounter this error.
    2. Configuration Settings: The system may have specific settings that restrict certain material types from being included in BOMs. This is often defined in the configuration settings of the material master or BOM settings.
    3. Incorrect Material Master Data: The material you are trying to use may not be set up correctly in the material master, or it may not be assigned to the appropriate BOM category.

    Solution:

    1. Check Material Type: Verify the material type of the item you are trying to add to the BOM. You can do this by checking the material master record (transaction code MM03).
    2. Review BOM Configuration: Check the configuration settings for BOMs in your SAP system. This can be done in the customizing settings (transaction code SPRO) under:
      • Logistics > Production > Master Data > BOM > Define BOM Usage.
      • Ensure that the material type you are trying to use is allowed for the BOM usage you are working with.
    3. Change Material Type: If the material type is not supported, consider changing the material type of the item you are trying to add, if feasible. This may involve creating a new material with a supported type.
    4. Consult with SAP Basis or Functional Consultant: If you are unsure about the configuration or how to proceed, it may be helpful to consult with an SAP Basis or functional consultant who can provide insights into the specific settings in your system.

    Related Information:

    • BOM Usage: Different BOM usages (like production, engineering, etc.) may have different allowed material types.
    • Material Master Data: Ensure that the material master data is complete and correctly configured for the intended use.
    • SAP Notes: Check for any relevant SAP Notes that may address this error or provide additional guidance on BOM configurations.

By following these steps, you should be able to identify the cause of the error and implement a solution to resolve it.
