What causes this issue?

You want to create the material you entered as a variant for an
existing BOM (-> variant BOM).
With a variant BOM, <ZH>only one</> alternative BOM can be allocated to
a material, so the alternative entered is ignored.
The alternative is determined and set internally by the system, and is
of no relevance to the user for a variant BOM.

The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

You want to change or display the BOM for a material. The material has
a variant BOM.
With a variant BOM, the allocation of material/plant/usage to an
alternative BOM is <ZH>unique</>. So the system ignores the alternative
entered and determines the correct alternative.

How to fix this error?

Press ENTER. The alternative is removed.
If you are in the <ZH>Create</> function, a pop-up window appears.
Here,you can enter the material for which you want to create a BOM
variant.
