The SAP error message 26014, which states "Document type & can only be assigned numbers internally," typically occurs when there is an attempt to use a document type that is configured to only accept internal number assignment, but an external number is being used or assigned.

    Cause:

    1. Document Type Configuration: The document type in question is set up in the system to only allow internal number assignment. This means that the system generates the document numbers automatically, and users cannot manually assign or input document numbers.
    2. Incorrect Number Assignment: An attempt to create or post a document using an external number (manually entered) when the document type is configured for internal numbering.

    Solution:

    1. Check Document Type Settings:

    2. Use Internal Number Assignment:

      • When creating a document, ensure that you are not trying to manually enter a document number. Instead, let the system generate the document number automatically.
    3. Change Document Type Configuration (if necessary):

      • If there is a business requirement to allow external number assignment for this document type, you can change the configuration to allow external number assignment. However, this should be done with caution and in accordance with your organization's policies.
    4. Consult with SAP Basis or Functional Consultant:

      • If you are unsure about making changes to the configuration, it is advisable to consult with an SAP Basis or functional consultant who can provide guidance based on your specific system setup and business requirements.

    Related Information:

    • Transaction Codes: You may need to use transaction codes like OBY6 (for document types) or FB01 (to post documents) to navigate to the relevant areas in SAP.
    • Documentation: Refer to SAP Help documentation for detailed information on document types and number assignment.
    • Testing: After making any changes, conduct thorough testing to ensure that the document type behaves as expected and that the error does not recur.
