  • Show details Hide details
  • What causes this issue?

The batch you are just processing has to be classified. You can do this
    in one of two ways:

The system issues an error message and will not allow you to continue with this transaction until the error is resolved.

The system classifies the batch automatically when it is created if the
material of the batch or another batch of the material has already been
    classified.
You create the batch classification manually after you have selected a
batch class and entered it on the classification screen.
The batch that you have processed should be classified with the class
<LS>&V1&</>. As this class is locked by another user, you cannot
    classify the batch.

    How to fix this error?

Unlock class <LS>&V1&</> or use another class.

  • What is the cause and solution for SAP error message 12170 - Classification not possible because class &1 is locked by another user ?

The SAP error message "12170 Classification not possible because class &1 is locked by another user" indicates that a classification operation cannot be performed on a specific class because it is currently locked by another user. This typically occurs in the context of SAP's classification system, where multiple users may attempt to access or modify the same classification data simultaneously.

    Cause:

    1. Concurrent Access: Another user is currently editing or has locked the class for classification, preventing other users from making changes.
    2. Session Timeout: A previous session may not have released the lock properly, causing the class to remain locked.
    3. System Error: Occasionally, system errors or crashes can lead to locks not being released as expected.

    Solution:

    1. Wait and Retry: The simplest solution is to wait for the other user to finish their work and release the lock. You can try again after some time.
    2. Check Lock Entries: Use transaction code SM12 to check for lock entries. You can see which user has locked the class and, if necessary, you can delete the lock entry (if you have the appropriate authorizations).
      • Go to transaction SM12.
      • Enter the class name in the "Object" field and execute.
      • Identify the user who has locked the class and take appropriate action.
    3. Contact the User: If you can identify the user who has the lock, you may want to contact them to see if they can release the lock.
    4. System Administrator: If the lock persists and you cannot resolve it, contact your SAP system administrator for assistance. They may need to investigate further or release the lock manually.

    Related Information:

    • Lock Mechanism: SAP uses a locking mechanism to prevent data inconsistencies when multiple users attempt to modify the same data simultaneously.
    • Transaction Codes: Familiarize yourself with relevant transaction codes such as:
      • SM12: To view and manage lock entries.
      • SE11: To check the data dictionary for the class definition.
      • CL02: To display class details.
    • User Authorizations: Ensure that you have the necessary authorizations to view and manage locks in the system.
    • Documentation: Refer to SAP Help documentation for more details on classification and locking mechanisms.
