- Classification not possible because class &1 is locked by another user ?The SAP error message "12170 Classification not possible because class &1 is locked by another user" indicates that a classification operation cannot be performed on a specific class because it is currently locked by another user. This typically occurs in the context of SAP's classification system, where multiple users may attempt to access or modify the same classification data simultaneously.
Cause:
- Concurrent Access: Another user is currently editing or has locked the class for classification, preventing other users from making changes.
- Session Timeout: A previous session may not have released the lock properly, causing the class to remain locked.
- System Error: Occasionally, system errors or crashes can lead to locks not being released as expected.
Solution:
- Wait and Retry: The simplest solution is to wait for the other user to finish their work and release the lock. You can try again after some time.
- Check Lock Entries: Use transaction code SM12 to check for lock entries. You can see which user has locked the class and, if necessary, you can delete the lock entry (if you have the appropriate authorizations).
- Go to transaction SM12.
- Enter the class name in the "Object" field and execute.
- Identify the user who has locked the class and take appropriate action.
- Contact the User: If you can identify the user who has the lock, you may want to contact them to see if they can release the lock.
- System Administrator: If the lock persists and you cannot resolve it, contact your SAP system administrator for assistance. They may need to investigate further or release the lock manually.
